Dr. Volker Eyert joins Materials Design as Senior Scientist

Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA and Le Mans, France - January 11, 2011.

Since 1998, Dr. Eyert has been at the Institute of Physics and the Center for Electronic Correlations and Magnetism at the University of Augsburg in Germany where he played an essential role in initiating and leading multi-institutional advanced research projects in the field of solid-state materials. He has lectured on Computational Physics, Materials Science, and Electronic Structure Calculations, and is the author of a book on electronic structure methods and about 120 research articles and book contributions.

“Dr. Eyert is a tremendous addition to our team,“ says Erich Wimmer, CEO of Materials Design®. “His deep knowledge in solid state physics and his experience in the development and application of major electronic structure programs is critical for us to respond to the growing needs of our customers. With Dr. Eyert, our company now has 16 PhD scientists as employees with expertise that includes solid-state physics, physical chemistry, statistical mechanics, quantum chemistry, polymer science, and computer science. This is a unique combination of talents which allows our company to bring the most advanced capabilities of integrated computational materials engineering to our customers.”

Dr. Eyert developed an efficient Full-Potential Augmented Spherical Wave (ASW) code, which is based on density functional theory and gives access to the electronic, magnetic, optical, and elastic properties of crystalline materials. Materials Design® distributed an early version of this code as "ElectrA.”

He studied physics at the University of Münster, Germany, and got a PhD in Physics from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. He held Post Doctoral positions at the Max-Planck-Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, Germany and the Hahn-Meitner-Institute in Berlin, Germany.
