Application and Research Scientist

We are seeking an Application and Research Scientist with expertise in first principle methods to join our dynamic and growing team in San Diego, CA providing pre-sales and post-sales support for Materials Design’s premier software environment for atomistic simulation of materials, MedeA.

Daily duties may include:

 

  • Provide scientific support for customers and prospects in using the MedeA® software environment to solve their research and development problems

  • Prepare presentation and training materials and conduct on-line and on-site presentations and trainings for customers and prospects

  • Provide technical support for customers and prospects on installing and configuring the MedeA® software environment on their computing resources

  • Participate in software development and/or contract research activities

 

Qualifications We Require

 

  • PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science, or related discipline with a focus in first principles methods

  • Expertise in VASP program

  • A resourceful and creative person with excellent interpersonal skills who thrives on helping others solve problems

  • A record of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at scientific conferences

 

Qualifications We Desire

 

  • Experience with the MedeA® software environment, or at least one of the following packages: LAMMPS, GIBBS, MOPAC, and Gaussian

  • Experience with high-performance computing platforms, parallel computing (multi-core and many-core), and cluster management

  • Experience with software development and shell scripting

  • Experience with kinetic Monte Carlo, quantum Monte Carlo, machine learning, coarse-grained methods, or phase field methods is a plus

  • Active in scientific forums and mailing lists

 

Position Information

 

This position is a full-time position based in the U.S. We offer competitive compensation and benefits including:

Materials Design, Inc is a global software & services company working with materials scientists in industry, government and academia to solve their design challenges.


Responsibilities:

 

IT/Systems 

 

Provide system admin of the company's virtual and physical servers, PC's, Macs, and file systems:
 

  • Support application and system software 

  • Configure new workstations and peripheral equipment 

  • Deploy software upgrades 

  • Monitor nightly backups and perform audits to ensure they are functioning successfully 

  • Restore data as requested 

  • Provide remote IT assistance to various jobsite locations 


Marketing Systems

 

Collaborate with marketing and sales on strategy and execution of marketing technology -- 
 

  • Administer and develop marketing automation and other digital platforms 
    -- setup, testing, data management, measurement and analysis, including:
     

    • Website platforms 

    • Marketing automation / email marketing 

    • Lead/contact databases 

    • Webinar platforms 

    • Web Analytics and tag management 

 

  • Oversee technical operation of email and marketing campaigns 

  • Provide reporting across systems 

  • Work closely with IT to integrate systems

QUALIFICATIONS:


Relevant technology skills, including:
 

  • Programming and scripting such as JavaScript, python, PHP 

  • HTML/CSS development 

  • Web servers and web content management frameworks 

  • SQL database concepts and reporting 

  • Excel or Google Sheets experience (scripting/macros a plus) 

  • REST APIs 

  • Windows, Mac, Linux administration a plus 

 

Other valuable skills: 
 

  • Setting up computer networks, Wi-Fi, et cetera 

  • Project management experience 

  • Ability to work well in a team environment 

  • Effective organizing and prioritizing skills 

  • Highly motivated, proactive and detail oriented 

 

Bonus points:
 

  • Hands-on experience using web, automation, CRM, and database platforms such as Wix, MailChimp, Salesforce, Foundation, Drupal 

  • Knowledgeable on email best practices, technologies and trends 

  • SEO/SEM, digital advertising 

  • Knowledgeable on Windows, Mac, Linux, and other IT systems 

  • Ability to build reports using automated reporting
